It soon became clear to Friends of Uganda that one way to help the Ugandan women was to sell their hand-crafted items. The Ugandan women, many of them widows, relied on their crafts to feed their families, pay rent, and send their children to school. Since fall 2007, Friends of Uganda has been selling the women's crafts at markets and christmas shows. Jim and Phyllis take them in a 6-by-12 trailer to shows throughout the year. The beauty of the crafts led to excellent sales.
Friends of Uganda works with three different artisan groups in Uganda. We use a business model rather than a consignment model. We pay for the goods before they are shipped, which means the women receive their money immediately. In addition to helping the women with basic needs, one widow was literally able to put a roof over her head. Her husband had built a house, but he died before it was finished. The widow lived in a small rented room with her three children. Thanks to Friends of Uganda, the house now has a roof and the family has moved in!
Since Christmas, 2007, Friends of Uganda provided items such as mattresses, sheets, blankets, shoes, clothing (and even a Christmas party!), for orphans in Mubende. Our website has photos of the orphans receiving these items.
